 – Mitsubishi Electric and Schaeffler have entered into a global strategic partnership. As part of the E-Factory alliance, they want to create new Industry 4.0 solutions that reduce machine downtime and maximize productivity for the customer.

Since 2010, the two companies have been partners in the E-Factory Alliance, which is part of the Mitsubishi Electric e-factory concept. This concept supports companies in their digital transformation activities, such as the integration of machine and plant data into manufacturing execution systems (MES) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) Industry sistems.

Intelligent solutions for optimizing production processes

Industry 4.0 scenarios are characterized by a strong individualisation of the products under the conditions of highly flexible production. In addition to production technology, Industrie 4.0 includes the digital networking of components and machines. Dr. Stefan Spindler, Chief Operating Officer of Schaeffler AG, explains: “In order to be able to offer our customers Industry 4.0 solutions with considerable added value, we need a cross-company cooperation. The combined expertise and understanding of Schaeffler and Mitsubishi Electric’s expertise in this global strategic partnership will allow us to deliver tailored, intelligent solutions tailored to customer and market needs, helping to optimize plant production and life-cycle costs. ”

Intensify cooperation on a global scale

Noriyuki Shimizu, Executive Officer and General Manager of Mitsubishi Electric’s Factory Automation Overseas Division, adds: “In recent years, we have successfully implemented projects in various countries in Europe and Asia. Now we want to intensify and expand our collaboration on a global scale. “Schaeffler and Mitsubishi Electric are working together to increase connectivity and create new Industry 4.0 solutions that reduce machine downtime and maximize productivity for the customer.

The SLMP (Seamless Message Protocol) machine protocol implemented in Schaeffler condition monitoring systems, for example, allows bi-directional vibration sensors to communicate with the programmable logic controller (PLC) from Mitsubishi Electric and enables transmission of the determined characteristic values. The PLC processes the data for information that is displayed in the form of plain text messages on the screen. Through a further integration stage, the condition monitoring system can also be connected to the PLC of the respective system via a network cable and the Modbus protocol.
