Ten AI robots – including those equipped with artificial intelligence – that perform functions related to security, cleanliness and information provision will be introduced experimentally at Takanawa Gateway Station when it opens, the East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) said, on December 3rd. The test will begin after the station is scheduled to open in spring 2020. Four different information-delivery robots will be introduced, including one featuring artificial intelligence-equipped digital signage that can answer questions – in text or audio – about the station, its surrounding areas, ways to transfer and other queries. AI Robots will be able to display advice in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean.

A security AI robot patrols a predefined route and issues warnings about suspicious individuals using lights and sirens. The cleaning robots will be deployed overnight.

A demonstration experiment for advertising AI robots will also be conducted, in which they will circulate around the station, displaying train etiquette instructions and other information.

The test and demonstration experience will continue from the station opening until the end of September 2020. They will be run in conjunction with another test to evaluate the use of QR codes containing train ticket information to pass through the gates.

ANA Opens World’s First Avatar Robot Store in Tokyoai robots

Japanese airline All Nipon Air Ways – ANA Holdings Inc opened on Thursday what it says is the world’s first store where customers can buy remotely via an avatar robot.

Several 1.5 meter tall rod-shaped robots will be in the “avatar store” until December 24, at a mall in Tokyo’s Nihombashi district, in collaboration with major operator Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd.

Customers who use computers can control the robot called “newme” from anywhere in the country and buy items at the gift shop as if they were there.

The robot has a tablet-sized monitor on its upper body that displays the customer’s facial expressions in real time and moves around the store on wheels.

Online registration is required to use the service, said ANA, which plans to introduce up to 1,000 avatar robots in Japan, including 100 in Nihombashi’s commercial and commercial district next year, in time for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

ANA hopes to develop avatar technologies as a potential pillar of its future revenues and plans to use them to deliver new services such as nursing care.

“With its potential to increase connectivity and help people build lasting bonds, no matter how far apart, avatar technology is well aligned with ANA HD’s core values,” said Kevin Kajitani, co-director of the ANA HOLDINGS INC. avatar “Avatar technology is a significant component of our plans to help create ‘Society 5.0‘, a world where interactions with technology and other people are perfect and intuitive. Instead of supplanting the human connection, avatars will make it deeper and will create a new variety of experiences that have never been possible before. ”
