Joinville introduce a “Alliance for Innovation” to develop the local innovation ecosystem

There are 47 companies and entities involved that signed the alliance for innovation in Joinville and 320 actions, focusing on capital increase, entrepreneurship programs and training for new investors, among other projects.

Minapim – by Hernan Valenzuela:  I confirmed the thesis that Brazil is several countries in one. I received an invitation to meet the Mayor of Joinville at 8 o’clock in the morning! Been  7:57, all attenders in the meeting room, headed by the Mayor Udo Dölher. After a warm welcome from the Mayor, entrepreneurs and other institutions welcome me as the Representative of Fraunhofer Enas.

Other meetings followed, all with a new component. People arrive on time, announce if they will be late, and have no parallel conversations or entangled issues during the meetings. To better understand this difference with some states in Brazil, it is important to review the roots of this local culture, which generates confidence in the articulations and brings practical results.

Joinville received its name from the Son of the King of France, Prince of Joinville and the Princess of Joinville Dona Francisca, sister of the Emperor of Brazil Dom Pedro II, is known in Brazil as the city of flowers, Ballet de Bolshoi, and bicycles. GDP per capita in 2014 was 44,303.65 reais. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP): R $ 24.2 billion (year 2014).

Its location, infrastructure, diversified economy and European colonization from Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy; made it the largest city in the State of Santa Catarina, responsible for about 20% of the state’s exports. The city concentrates great part of the economic activity in the industry, emphasizing the sectors metalmecanic, textile, plastic, metallurgical, chemical and pharmaceutical.

One of the main characteristics of the city is young leadership. In several business circles, government and commerce, the participation of young people (who have already passed the university) is notorious. The natural result is the continued creativity activities.

The campi of the Federal University of Santa Catarina UFSC in Joinville receives 1,700 undergraduate and 200 post-graduate students in its seven engineering courses and a bachelor’s degree in Science and Technology.

Within this scenario, the “Municipal Alliance for the Innovation in Joinville” was created and started on May 30, 2019, as a movement of Companies, Universities, government, Institutions and people that promote or support science, technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and education in the region of Joinville, seeking the consolidation of the region as a reference point in innovation and entrepreneurship.

To develop a strong, hyperconnected ecosystem is the initial goal of attracting investors. This initiative is the result of articulations and actions, in which the participating entities commit voluntarily, to work on strengthening the regional ecosystem of innovation.

Joinville has the “Agora Tech Park“, a private technological park of the Perini group, with a modern infrastructure, already home of technology companies with high added value, and UFSC  integrating an ecosystem suitable for the growth of the local innovation system. The installation of Agora Tech Park provided a auspicious environment for the startups attraction and laboratories of large companies that benefit from the proximity of the university.

This case is a clear example that the success of an initiative lies in people’s proactivity, commitment to the goals and the maintenance of a cohesive group. The creativity of the actors, born of the dreams of youngs, makes this endeavor a pleasant journey, perhaps with some obstacles, but with determination and positive attitude, they overcome barriers.

In this way, it seems more appropriate to attract investors, and provide access to resources for new entrepreneurs; based on the positive results of the current infrastructure, Perini Business Park prepares the expansion of the facilities to host more companies.

In addition to the 320 activities programmed by the WG, other networking activities and actions of the Pact for Innovation take place in ÁGORA.

With this framework and scenario, and the commitment of those involved, it is highly likely that the objectives will be achieved.

Comment from Marcio Jacson, CEO and cofounder of startup TiFlux: “What we are building is an ecosystem and not an ecosystem. The mindset must be focused on collaboration with execution. And think beyond the city, in Santa Catarina and Brazil. ”
