 – To further promote reconstruction, Fukushima Prefecture is focusing on hydrogen as a new form of energy and has pledged to build one of the first models for a future hydrogen society.

Minapim by Hernan Valenzuela: Fukushima Prefecture and Toyota Motor Corporation announced in Japan that they have started discussions with various partners about building a city for a new future that uses hydrogen and other technologies produced in Fukushima.

Isuzu, Hino and Toyota seek to achieve carbon neutrality and want to contribute to building a new city of the future in Fukushima through their three-company partnership; consequently, the city, Toyota and their partners will create an implementation model for hydrogen-based deliveries in supermarkets and convenience stores, which play a role both as essential urban infrastructure and as evacuation areas in times of disaster.

They will first build an implementation model for a city with a population of 300,000, before embarking on the challenge of applying the model to cities of similar size across the country.

The implementation model will make use of hydrogen produced at various locations across the city, including Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R), introduce multiple fuel cell (FC) trucks for deliveries, optimize operational management and hydrogen refueling schedules through the use of connected technologies, and perform energy management that meets prevailing local conditions.

Furthermore, in response to the needs and problems experienced by Namie City – where FH2R is located – and other regions of the prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture, Toyota and their partners will operate FC kitchen cars and medical cars, and use hydrogen in stores and factories in Fukushima Prefecture to reduce carbon emissions from the supply chain.

After the announcement of Japan’s Carbon Neutral Target for 2050, there is a growing need for concrete initiatives aimed at building sustainable societies that can be passed on to future generations.

The city, Toyota and their partners share this conviction; to this end, they intend to constantly promote the creation of one of the world’s first hydrogen and carbon neutral societies, expanding their spheres of cooperation and taking advantage of the diverse regional characteristics of the Fukushima Prefecture.
