Minapim Hernan Valenzuela: On September 17, the final stage of the Falling Walls Lab 2020 (FWL) Brazil contest will be held, a Brazilian with the most transformative idea will be selected to compete in the world stage of the competition, organized by Falling Walls Foundation, Berlin.
This year, both the Brazilian phase, organized by the German Center for Science and Innovation – DWIH São Paulo, and the global phase will be conducted in the online environment due to the covid-19 pandemic.
The 15 pre-selected candidates among the 39 applicants participated in the national stage, with emphasis on the participation of the states of São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The projects focus on topics such as food waste, atmospheric pollution, plastic packaging recycling, agricultural insurance, polymeric 3D printing photonic material, basic sanitation, among others.
Each candidate will have three minutes to present, in a video pitch, in English, the relevance and transformational power of their proposal. Then, live and online, the candidate answers questions from the jury.
Comprised of experts from academia, the press, the business community and the innovation ecosystem, the jury will make the assessment based on three criteria: innovative character, relevance and impact of the proposal and communication skills.

Judges and prizes for the winners

The jury will include the director of DAAD Brazil and DWIH São Paulo, Jochen Hellmann, professors Carlos Eduardo Pereira, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and director of operations for the Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation – Embrapii, and Maria do Carmo Martins Sobral, from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), as well as the senior vice president of Chemicals, Performance Products and Sustainability at BASF and leader of the Innovation Committee of the Brazil-Germany Chamber, Antônio Lacerda, the CEO from the platform 100 Open Startups, Bruno Rondani, and the journalist Karin Hueck.

The jury will choose the top three, from which the first qualifies for the world stage. In addition, the jury will also award one of the top three or even another candidate the Entrepreneurship Award of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which gives the right to participate in Innovation Week, a program on innovation and entrepreneurship applied by universities German authorities under DAAD supervision.
“The initiative aims to stimulate and train participants to make their ideas transform into economic activity. Maybe even the possibility of founding a startup in Germany? ”, Comments Jochen Hellmann, director of DWIH São Paulo and DAAD in Brazil.
Viewers of Falling Walls Lab Brazil 2020, in turn, will also be able to choose the transformative proposal they liked the most. The most voted candidate wins the Audience Award 2020.
Euraxess Brazil, will give professional support to the winning candidate, to record a new pitch video, with which he will compete in the world stage of the Falling Walls Lab.
The videos of the 100 participants in this stage will be published on an online platform and, thus, disseminated and promoted worldwide by the Falling Walls Foundation and its partners. A high-level international jury will select 10 finalists for the FWL grand final, this year renamed Emerging Talents in the new Breakthoughs of the Year contest.
FWL Brazil 2020 is organized by the German Center for Science and Innovation (DWIH) São Paulo, in partnership with the German institution Falling Walls Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Federal Ministry of External Relations of Germany, the Euraxess Brazil and the agency Inova Unicamp.
