IOT Amazon will have long-range wireless network for devices

Amazon.com has announced the development of Amazon Sidewalk, a far-reaching equivalent to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless protocols, waiting for third parties to use on smart devices.

Sidewalk usage is targeted at devices as varied as garden water sensors and mailboxes that would alert the owner of new mail.

The new product will use the 900 MHz low-bandwidth spectrum to extend the control distance of devices with less power than standard Wi-Fi, Amazon said.

The company, started with book sales, and explores new ventures, such as producing TV shows for its Amazon Prime subscribers. Ranked as one of the four largest technology companies, alongside Apple, Alphabet Inc. and Facebook Inc., and is a leading provider of cloud services.

It is working on publishing a new network protocol, made up of rules governing the communication between connected devices, so that developers can use it for new products.

Sidewalk according to Amazon has already been tested in Los Angeles. He anticipated launching a dog tracker in 2020 as a developer reference, which will use the network to alert the pet owner when he leaves a certain perimeter.
