The EU Commission is requesting proposals for the creation of a European network of artificial intelligence research centers.
The Heise by Stefan Krempl : In the EU, world-class scientists in artificial intelligence (AI) must come together to advance research and development on this key technology. On Thursday (11/07), the European Commission urged the scientific community to present concrete initiatives to build a “dynamic European network of AI centers of excellence”. The deadline for this is until November 13. The project will be financed by the Horizon 2020 research framework program for a total of € 50 million.
Research with industrial relevance.
According to the EU call, the AI Centers intend to improve cooperation within the European Research Community on Artificial Intelligence and promote technological progress in this sector. Each subnetwork should focus on key scientific or technological challenges of industrial relevance and bring together relevant experts.
It is also planned to promote exchange and coordination among the selected projects. For this purpose, doctoral programs will be developed, artificial intelligence integrated into the study plans and organized internships. The Commission also expects greater cooperation with the industry to promote an “ecosystem of research and development resources, experience and infrastructure” in areas such as supercomputing, robotics and the Internet of things.
Previously, the Commission announced that it would invest 20 million euros in the creation of the AI4EU online platform. This AI portal on request aims to facilitate the exchange of AI tools and resources in all member states in line with AI’s European strategy. In general, the Commission aims to increase investment in research and development of artificial intelligence in the public and private sectors by at least 20,000 million euros by the end of 2020. Much of the money must come from the economy. In Germany, for example, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has already launched the “Learning Systems Platform” to promote “KI made in Germany”.
